About Wisbech Grammar School

Wisbech Grammar School was founded in 1379 in the Fens market town of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire — making it 647 years old and among the very oldest English schools in continuous operation. The school operates today on a central Wisbech campus, became co-educational in 1976 and educates around 593 pupils ages 4-18. The Headmaster is Chris Staley. The school is a member of the HMC and is inspected by the ISI. The school's most historically significant alumnus is Thomas Clarkson — the Abolitionist who, with William Wilberforce, founded the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade in 1787 and whose research and pamphleteering provided the empirical foundation for Wilberforce's parliamentary campaign against the slave trade. Clarkson was born in Wisbech and educated at Wisbech Grammar School in the 1770s. The school operates a substantial bursary programme.
