About The Blue Coat School
The Blue Coat School Birmingham was founded in 1722 by William Higgs as a Church of England charity school for the boys of Birmingham — taking its name from the distinctive blue coat uniform worn by the pupils, common to the post-Reformation "Blue Coat" charitable schools (Christ's Hospital London being the most famous). The school operated for over two and a half centuries as a charity foundation school before becoming a full prep school in the late twentieth century, and became co-educational in the 1970s. The school today educates around 667 pupils ages 4-11 on a campus in Edgbaston, Birmingham. The Headmaster is Andrew Coleman. The school is a member of the IAPS and is inspected by the ISI. The school is a feeder to the major Birmingham senior schools (King Edward's Birmingham, KEHS, Solihull). The school operates a substantial bursary programme intended to preserve the 1722 charitable founding principle of educational access for Birmingham families regardless of family means.
