Sutton Valence School

Sutton Valence School was founded in 1576 by William Lambe, Lord Mayor of London 1568-69 and Master of the Clothworkers' Company, as a Tudor grammar school in the Kentish village of Sutton Valence. The school is trusteed by the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers, one of the twelve Great Livery Companies of London, which has governed the school for 450 years. The school sits today on a rural hillside campus in the village of Sutton Valence, in the Weald of Kent, with views across the Greensand Ridge towards the South Downs. The Headmaster is Bruce Grindlay.

Sutton Valence became co-educational in 1983 and today educates around 866 pupils with a substantial boarding population. The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association. The school's academic profile is strong mid-tier independent — solid A-Level results and a respectable Oxbridge / Russell Group pipeline reflecting the bursary programme.

The school's most internationally significant alumnus is Charles Frederick Worth — the English-born founder of haute couture, who in 1858 opened the House of Worth in Paris, the first modern French fashion house. Worth dressed the Empress Eugénie of France (wife of Napoleon III) and established the conventions of seasonal collections, fashion shows with live models, and the named-couturier brand — all of which became foundational conventions of the modern global fashion industry. Worth is widely regarded as "the father of haute couture", and the modern Paris fashion industry descends substantially from his pioneering work. He attended Sutton Valence in the 1830s.

The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers, intended to preserve the founder's Tudor charitable intent of providing educational access for Kentish families regardless of family means.
