About Scarisbrick Hall School
Scarisbrick Hall School was founded in 1964 in Scarisbrick Hall, a Grade I listed Victorian Gothic country house in West Lancashire, just inland of Southport. Scarisbrick Hall is one of the most architecturally significant Victorian country houses in England — the house was extensively rebuilt in the 1830s and 40s by the great Gothic Revival architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (the architect who designed the interior of the Palace of Westminster, including the House of Lords, the House of Commons and the clock tower of Big Ben). Pugin's Scarisbrick is widely regarded as one of his masterpieces of domestic Gothic architecture, and the house's vast clock tower (built by Pugin's son Edward) dominates the West Lancashire skyline.
The school was founded in 1964 by a Christian-evangelical educational charity who acquired the lease on the Pugin house and converted it into a co-educational independent school. The Headmaster is Andrew Hammond. The school today educates around 890 pupils ages 3-18 across an integrated Pre-Prep, Junior and Senior School. The school is a member of the Independent Schools Association and is inspected by the ISI. The school operates with a Christian-evangelical ethos but is non-denominational in admissions.
The school's academic profile is mid-tier North-West independent — solid A-Level results, broad-access tuition fees, and a strong family/local-community ethos. The school's most significant distinguishing feature is the campus itself: studying within and around Pugin's Gothic Revival masterpiece produces a remarkable architectural and historic-environment learning experience. The school operates a substantial bursary programme intended to provide educational access for West Lancashire families regardless of family means.
