About Queen's College, London
Queen's College London was founded in 1848 by Frederick Denison Maurice — the Anglican theologian, Christian socialist and founder of the British Christian Socialist movement — as the first English girls' school to provide a serious academic education for women, making it the oldest girls' school in England by founding date (predating Cheltenham Ladies' College, 1853, and North London Collegiate, 1850). The school sits today on Harley Street in central London — the historic medical-consulting district — and educates around 635 girls ages 11-18. The Principal is Richard Tillett. The school is a member of the GSA and is inspected by the ISI.
Queen's College's foundation in 1848 is among the most consequential single moments in the history of English women's education: Maurice's school established the principle that women could and should be educated academically to the same standard as men, decades before the founding of the major Victorian women's colleges at Oxford (Lady Margaret Hall 1878, Somerville 1879) and Cambridge (Girton 1869, Newnham 1871). Several of those Victorian women's-college founders were themselves pupils at Queen's College.
The school operates a substantial bursary programme intended to preserve the founder's 1848 Christian socialist principle of educational access for academically able girls regardless of family means.
