About Queen Ethelburga's Prep School
Queen Ethelburga's Prep School is one of the four constituent schools of the Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate, a co-educational independent boarding school complex set on a 220-acre rural campus at Thorpe Underwood, near Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The Collegiate was founded in 1912 as Queen Ethelburga's School, named after the Anglo-Saxon queen who was the wife of King Edwin of Northumbria and whose conversion to Christianity in 627 AD was the founding moment of Northumbrian Christianity. The school relocated to its present 220-acre Thorpe Underwood campus in 1991 and was expanded into the multi-school Collegiate model in the 2000s under the Brierley family ownership.
The Prep School educates around 828 pupils ages 3-11 within the broader Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate framework, which also includes Queen Ethelburga's College (ages 11-18, the senior school), the Faculty (ages 14-19, an academic-fast-track senior school) and Chapter House (ages 14-19, a parallel academic senior school with a different curricular focus). The Principal is Steven Jandrell.
The Collegiate is unusual among UK independent schools in two respects: it is privately owned by the Brierley family (rather than being a charitable trust), and it operates a substantial international boarding population (50+ nationalities) with a particular focus on East Asian, Middle Eastern and Russian markets. The 220-acre campus accommodates extensive equestrian, polo and golf facilities, alongside a working theatre, concert hall and substantial sporting infrastructure.
The school's academic profile is mid-tier independent — solid Common Entrance results and a substantial international university pipeline. The Collegiate as a whole operates fee scholarships and Foundation places intended to provide access for academically able children regardless of family means, although the Collegiate is among the more commercially operated UK independent schools.
