About Queen Elizabeth's Hospital Bristol
Queen Elizabeth's Hospital School Bristol — universally known as "QEH" — was founded in 1590 by royal charter of Elizabeth I, with funds bequeathed by John Carr, a Bristol merchant, for the education of boys from impoverished Bristol families. The school is one of the oldest schools in Bristol and operates today on a central Bristol campus. The school is part of the Bristol Charities (a charitable trust descended from the Tudor royal endowment) and the school's bursary programme provides substantial fee remissions for Bristol families on the original Elizabethan philanthropic model. The Headmaster is Stephen Holliday.
The school became co-educational in stages from 2017 (Sixth Form) and fully in 2022, and today educates around 754 pupils ages 7-18. The school is a member of the HMC and is inspected by the ISI. The school maintains its distinctive Tudor-era uniform of long dark blue gowns, knee breeches and white linen bands at the neck — among the oldest school uniforms in continuous use in England.
The school operates a substantial bursary programme via Bristol Charities, intended to preserve the founding 1590 Elizabethan royal philanthropic intent of providing educational access for the boys and girls of Bristol regardless of family means.
