About Malvern College
Malvern College was founded in 1865 as a Church of England boys' boarding school on the eastern slopes of the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire. The school sits today on a 250-acre rural campus with views across the Severn Vale, in one of the most spectacularly sited English boarding schools. Malvern became co-educational in 1992 and today educates around 640 pupils with a substantial boarding population. The Headmaster is Keith Metcalfe. The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association and offers the IB Diploma alongside A-Levels.
The school's two most internationally significant alumni are both of late-twentieth-century cultural and technological consequence. Sir Tim Berners-Lee OM KBE — the British computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web at CERN in 1989-90, the single most consequential information-technology innovation of the late twentieth century — was a Malvern College boy in the 1960s. The novelist and Christian apologist C. S. Lewis — author of The Chronicles of Narnia (the most widely-read English children's fantasy series after Tolkien), Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters and the Space Trilogy — was at Malvern from 1913 to 1914 (his Malvern memoir Surprised by Joy records his unhappy time there). The Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis (Poet Laureate 1968-72 and the father of the three-time Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis) was at Malvern. The actor John Le Mesurier (Sergeant Wilson in Dad's Army) and the broadcaster Jeremy Paxman (Newsnight, University Challenge) were both Malvern boys.
The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Malvern College Foundation.
