About Loughborough Grammar School
Loughborough Grammar School was founded in 1495 by Thomas Burton — a Loughborough draper and former Lord Mayor of London — as a Tudor grammar school in the Leicestershire town of Loughborough. The school is among the oldest English schools in continuous operation (531 years), pre-dating Henry VII's reign even — Burton's school was opened in 1495 with Burton's bequest providing for a master to teach Latin grammar to the boys of Loughborough.
The school operates today on a central Loughborough campus and is part of the Loughborough Schools Foundation, a charitable trust that operates four schools in Loughborough: Loughborough Grammar School (boys, ages 10-18), Loughborough High School (girls, ages 11-18), Loughborough Amherst School (co-educational Catholic, ages 4-18) and Fairfield Preparatory School (co-educational, ages 3-11). The Headmaster is Duncan Byrne. The school is a member of the HMC and is inspected by the ISI.
The school's academic profile is strong East Midlands independent — solid A-Level results and a strong Russell Group pipeline, with a particularly strong Loughborough University feeder relationship reflecting the geographic proximity to one of England's leading engineering and sports-science universities. The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Loughborough Schools Foundation, intended to preserve the founding 1495 grammar-school principle of educational access for the boys of Loughborough regardless of family means.
