About Lord Wandsworth College
Lord Wandsworth College was founded in 1922 under the will of Sydney James Stern, 1st Baron Wandsworth, a Jewish-British banker and philanthropist who in his 1912 will left substantial funds for the establishment of a school specifically for the orphaned children of agricultural labourers from across the United Kingdom and Ireland. The school operates today on the 1,200-acre rural agricultural estate at Long Sutton, Hampshire, that Stern's executors purchased for the school in 1922. The school is co-educational ages 11-18 with around 707 pupils and a substantial boarding population. The Head is Adam Williams.
The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association and is governed by the Lord Wandsworth Foundation. The Foundation continues to fund the substantial Foundation bursary programme that Stern's will established — over 50% of pupils receive some form of fee remission via the Foundation, with full-fee remissions reserved specifically for the orphaned or single-parented children of agricultural and similar modest-income families. This is among the most generous bursary programmes of any UK independent school.
The 1,200-acre rural estate makes Lord Wandsworth among the largest school campuses in England by acreage. The estate continues to operate as a working agricultural enterprise alongside the school, with the Estate funding being part of the school's Foundation income.
