About King Edward VI High School for Girls
King Edward VI High School for Girls Birmingham — universally abbreviated as "KEHS" — was founded in 1883 as the girls' sister school of King Edward's School (boys, founded 1552). The school is part of the King Edward VI Foundation, Birmingham — the Tudor charitable foundation descended from the 1552 royal endowment of King Edward VI that today operates seven schools across Birmingham. The school operates on a campus in Edgbaston, central Birmingham, immediately adjacent to its brother school King Edward's and to the University of Birmingham. The Principal is Kirsty von Malaisé.
KEHS is girls-only ages 11-18 with around 661 pupils. The school is a member of the GSA and is inspected by the ISI. KEHS is consistently ranked among the top three UK girls' schools by A-Level results and Oxbridge offer rate — typically with one of the very highest non-London girls' school Oxbridge offer rates in the country.
The school's most internationally famous alumna is Dame Diana Rigg DBE — the actress whose roles include Emma Peel in the 1960s ITV series The Avengers, Olenna Tyrell in HBO's Game of Thrones, Countess Tracy di Vicenzo in the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), and the BAFTA- and Emmy-winning television and theatre actress of nearly six decades. Rigg attended KEHS in the 1940s and 50s. The Royal Shakespeare Company actress Dame Janet Suzman DBE — who played Cleopatra in the famous RSC Antony and Cleopatra opposite Richard Johnson — was a King Edward's High girl.
The Guardian columnist and political commentator Polly Toynbee — one of the leading voices of the British centre-left commentariat for forty years — was at KEHS. The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the King Edward VI Foundation.
