About John Lyon School

The John Lyon School was founded in 1876 by Harrow School as a separate day school provision for the local boys of Harrow — preserving the founding 1572 statute of John Lyon (the Tudor founder of Harrow School itself), which required the school to give preference to local Harrow boys. By the mid-Victorian period Harrow School had become almost exclusively a boarding school for non-local boys, and the John Lyon School was founded to provide the day-school provision for local Harrow boys that the parent school no longer offered. The school is governed under the same John Lyon Foundation as Harrow School itself — making it a sister institution of Harrow despite the very different academic and social profile.

The school operates today on a central Harrow campus, immediately adjacent to Harrow School itself on Harrow-on-the-Hill in north-west London. The school is boys-only ages 11-18, with a co-educational Sixth Form admitted from 2024. The school educates around 832 pupils. The Headmistress is Katherine Haynes. The school is a member of the HMC and is inspected by the ISI.

The school is a serious academic competitor in north-west London independent education — a top-quintile boys' day school with strong A-Level results and a strong Oxbridge / Russell Group pipeline. The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the John Lyon Foundation, intended to preserve the founder's 1572 intent of providing educational access for local Harrow boys regardless of family means.
