About Hill House School, Doncaster
Hill House School in Doncaster was founded in 1948 by the Crowder family as a small co-educational independent school in the South Yorkshire town of Doncaster. The school has remained in continuous family ownership through three generations of the Crowder family — making it unusual among UK independent schools, which are predominantly governed by charitable trusts. The current Headmaster is David Holland; the school continues to be managed in close collaboration with the Crowder family.
The school operates on a 100-acre rural campus at Auckley, near Doncaster, and educates around 890 pupils ages 3-18 across an integrated Pre-Prep, Junior and Senior School. The school is a member of the Independent Schools Association and is inspected by the ISI. The 100-acre rural campus provides extensive sports facilities — rugby, cricket, hockey, athletics — and a strong outdoor pursuits programme.
The school's academic profile is mid-tier Yorkshire independent — solid A-Level results, broad-access tuition fees, and a strong family/local-community ethos reflecting the unusual family-ownership model. The school's geographic position in South Yorkshire produces a strong feeder relationship to the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester, alongside the standard Oxbridge and Russell Group pipeline.
The school operates a substantial bursary programme intended to provide educational access for South Yorkshire families regardless of family means.
