About Embley
Embley School operates today in Embley Park, the Hampshire country house that was the childhood home of Florence Nightingale — the Crimean War nurse who founded modern nursing as a profession and whose Notes on Nursing (1859) and her London Nightingale School at St Thomas's Hospital (1860) established the foundational principles of nineteenth-century nursing reform. The Nightingale family acquired Embley Park in 1825 when Florence was five, and the future nurse spent much of her childhood at the house before her family's transition to Lea Hurst in Derbyshire.
The school itself was founded in 1946 — long after Nightingale's death in 1910 — when Embley Park was acquired for educational use. The school is co-educational ages 1-18 with around 688 pupils on a 100-acre rural campus at Romsey, Hampshire. The Principal is Cliona O'Neill. The school is a member of the Boarding Schools Association and the Independent Schools Association and is inspected by the ISI. The Florence Nightingale connection produces a distinctive school identity and a strong feeder relationship to the University of Southampton's nursing and healthcare programmes.
