About Blundell's School

Blundell's School was founded in 1604 by Peter Blundell, a Devon-born Tudor merchant and Master of the Mercers' Company, in his home town of Tiverton, Devon. The school is trusteed by the Worshipful Company of Mercers. Blundell's became co-educational in 1976 and today educates around 616 pupils with a substantial boarding population on a 100-acre rural campus at Tiverton, Devon. The Head is Bart Wielenga. The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association.

The school's most internationally famous alumnus is the Victorian novelist R. D. Blackmore — author of Lorna Doone (1869), the famous historical romance set in the West Country during the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685 and among the great popular Victorian novels of the West Country. Blackmore was at Blundell's in the 1830s. The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Worshipful Company of Mercers, intended to preserve the founder's 1604 Tudor charitable intent of providing educational access for Devon families regardless of family means.
