About Ampleforth College

Ampleforth College was founded in 1802 by exiled English Benedictine monks who had operated a school at Dieulouard in northern France from 1608 (the same Recusant period that produced Downside). The Benedictines acquired the Ampleforth estate in the North York Moors in 1802 and established Ampleforth Abbey alongside the school. The school operates today on a 2,200-acre rural campus in the North York Moors National Park. The school became co-educational in 2002.

The school's most internationally significant alumnus is Cardinal Basil Hume OM OSB — Archbishop of Westminster from 1976 to 1999 and the principal English Roman Catholic figure of the late twentieth century. Hume was a monk and Abbot of Ampleforth before his elevation to the archiepiscopate. The Order of Merit cardinal substantially raised the public profile of English Roman Catholicism in the 1980s and 90s.

In sport, the England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio OBE — Captain of England's 2003 Rugby World Cup winning team and the most-capped English rugby flanker — was an Ampleforth boy. The Head is Robin Dyer. The school is a member of the HMC, the Boarding Schools Association and the CISC.
