About Worth School
Worth School is a Roman Catholic Benedictine boarding and day school for pupils aged 11-18, located on the 500-acre estate of Worth Abbey in the village of Worth, West Sussex, on the northern edge of the High Weald. The school was founded in 1933 as a preparatory school by the monks of Downside Abbey in Somerset; the Downside community sent a group of monks to occupy Paddockhurst, the former estate of Lord Cowdray, and established a Benedictine school in the buildings. In 1957 the school became fully independent of Downside, and in 2008 it became co-educational, opening to girls in all year groups.
Worth is one of only three Benedictine independent boarding schools in the United Kingdom — the others being Ampleforth (Yorkshire) and Downside (Somerset) — and remains structurally connected to the Benedictine monastic community at Worth Abbey, whose buildings adjoin the school grounds. The school is a member of the HMC, the CISC, the BSA and ISI. The Head Master is Stuart McPherson, in post since 2024 following the retirement of long-serving headmaster Stuart McPherson's predecessor.
The school's setting is unusually peaceful: 500 acres of rolling Sussex countryside, with the Abbey church (consecrated 1975 and designed by Francis Pollen) at the centre. Spiritual formation is a defining feature of the school: regular Mass at the Abbey, retreat programmes led by the monastic community, and a curriculum that integrates Catholic Social Teaching with the wider liberal-arts academic offering. Worth alumni — "Old Worthies" — include senior figures across English law, the Catholic Church and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Among the school's teaching staff in the 1970s was the future Fra' Andrew Bertie, who served as 78th Grand Master of the Order of Malta from 1988 until his death in 2008 — the first English Grand Master in over 200 years. His cause for beatification was opened by the Catholic Church in 2012.
Worth operates a substantial bursary programme through Catholic Education Service grants and the Worth Foundation, intended to preserve the Benedictine tradition of educational access for boys and girls of Catholic families regardless of family means.
