About Westonbirt School
Westonbirt School was founded in 1928 in the former Westonbirt House, the Victorian Gloucestershire country house of the Holford family — Robert Stayner Holford was the Victorian botanist whose private arboretum (the Westonbirt Arboretum) is one of the most important tree collections in England and is now owned by Forestry England. The school occupies Westonbirt House itself and its 210-acre Cotswolds estate, immediately adjacent to (but separate from) the Westonbirt Arboretum.
The school is girls-only ages 11-18 with around 794 pupils and a substantial boarding population. The Head is Natasha Dangerfield. The school is a member of the GSA and the Boarding Schools Association.
Westonbirt's distinctive co-curricular strength is equestrian sport — the school operates one of the top schoolgirl equestrian programmes in the United Kingdom, with on-campus stabling, riding facilities and a competitive equestrian team. The school's Cotswolds setting and proximity to the Badminton Horse Trials (the world's premier three-day-event horse trials, held annually at Badminton Park, about ten miles from the school) supports a strong sporting and outdoor profile.
The school operates a substantial bursary programme intended to provide educational access for Cotswolds and West Country families regardless of family means.
