About The King's School, Gloucester
The King's School Gloucester was re-founded in 1541 by King Henry VIII as part of the royal re-foundation of the medieval cathedral schools following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The school's educational lineage extends back through the medieval Gloucester Abbey school to the early medieval period, although the 1541 royal re-foundation is the formal date. The school operates today in the medieval precincts of Gloucester Cathedral — the magnificent Norman cathedral built between 1089 and 1499, with one of the most extensive surviving fan-vaulted cloisters in England (the cloisters were used as Hogwarts in some of the Harry Potter films). The Headmaster is David Morton.
The school is co-educational ages 3-18 with around 714 pupils. The school is a member of the HMC and the Cathedral Schools Association. The school maintains the Gloucester Cathedral Choir choral tradition, with the Cathedral Choristers educated at the school. The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the Gloucester Cathedral Schools Foundation, intended to preserve the founding cathedral-school principle of educational access for Gloucestershire families regardless of family means.
