About The Abbey, Reading
The Abbey School in Reading — known locally as "The Abbey" — was founded in 1887 by Eleanor Higgs as a small girls' day school in the Berkshire town of Reading. The school is named after the medieval Reading Abbey, the major twelfth-century Cluniac monastery founded by Henry I in 1121 that gave Reading its prominence in medieval English ecclesiastical life and whose ruins survive in central Reading today. The Abbey School operates on a campus immediately adjacent to the medieval abbey precincts.
The school educates around 905 pupils ages 3-18 and is girls-only throughout. The Head is Sally Whitaker. The school is a member of the GSA and is inspected by the ISI. A-Level results place The Abbey consistently in the top quintile of Thames Valley girls' independent schools by Oxbridge offer numbers, with a particularly strong sciences and Oxford pipeline (Reading's proximity to Oxford produces a strong feeder relationship).

Winslet is one of the youngest actresses to receive seven Academy Award nominations and is regarded as among the great English-language screen actresses of her generation. She attended the school as a teenager in the 1980s.
