About Sutton High School GDST
Sutton High School was founded in 1884 as a school of the Girls' Public Day School Trust (now the GDST). The school operates on a single central Sutton site in the London Borough of Sutton, south London. The school educates around 913 pupils ages 3-18 and is girls-only throughout. The Headmistress is Beth Dawson. The school is a member of the GSA and the GDST and is inspected by the ISI.
The school is governed by the Girls' Day School Trust — the Victorian charitable federation founded in 1872 to provide academically rigorous, affordable day-school education for girls at a time when this was almost completely unavailable in England. The GDST today operates 25 schools across the UK, of which Sutton High is one of the historic original member schools.
The school's academic profile is strongest in the sciences, mathematics, modern languages and music. The school's geographic position in the London Borough of Sutton — historically distinguished by the concentration of selective state grammar schools (Sutton Grammar, Wallington Grammar, Wilson's Grammar, Nonsuch High) — produces a particularly strong academic profile, with A-Level results placing Sutton High consistently in the top quintile of London girls' independent schools by Oxbridge offer numbers.
The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the GDST charitable foundation, intended to maintain the founding Victorian principle of educational access for academically able girls regardless of family means.
