Streatham & Clapham High School GDST

Streatham & Clapham High School was founded in 1887 as a Girls' Public Day School Trust (now GDST) foundation, originally as separate Streatham and Clapham high schools that merged in the early twentieth century. The school operates today across two south London sites — the Senior School in Streatham and the Junior School in Clapham — with around 847 pupils ages 3-18. The Headmistress is Anna Hall. The school is a member of the GSA and the GDST and is inspected by the ISI.

The school's most internationally significant alumna is Angela Carter — the novelist whose Nights at the Circus, The Bloody Chamber, The Magic Toyshop and Wise Children established her as the most influential English magical-realist of the late twentieth century. Carter's reimaginings of fairy tales in The Bloody Chamber (1979) — feminist Gothic versions of Bluebeard, Beauty and the Beast, Red Riding Hood and others — remain canonical reference texts for feminist literary theory. Carter was at Streatham & Clapham in the late 1950s.

The school is governed by the Girls' Day School Trust and operates a substantial bursary programme via the GDST charitable foundation, intended to maintain the founding Victorian principle of educational access for academically able girls regardless of family means.
