About St Swithun's School
St Swithun's School was founded in 1884 as a Church of England girls' school in the cathedral city of Winchester, Hampshire — taking its name from St Swithun, the ninth-century Bishop of Winchester whose name is preserved in the English folk-meteorological tradition ("if it rains on St Swithun's Day, 15 July, it will rain for the next forty days"). The school operates today on a 45-acre campus at Winchester and educates around 715 pupils ages 4-18 with a substantial boarding population. The Head Mistress is Jane Gandee. The school is a member of the GSA and the Boarding Schools Association and is inspected by the ISI.
The school's academic profile is top-quintile Hampshire girls' boarding school, with strong A-Level results and a strong Oxbridge / Russell Group pipeline. The school's geographic position in Winchester — across the River Itchen from Winchester College and adjacent to Winchester Cathedral — produces a strong professional and academic family parent body. The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the St Swithun's Foundation.
