About Ryde School with Upper Chine
Ryde School was founded in 1921 as a small independent school on the Isle of Wight, providing the principal independent education on the island. The school subsequently merged with Upper Chine School (founded 1914) to form Ryde School with Upper Chine, with the combined institution operating from the Ryde campus. The school is co-educational ages 2-18 with around 723 pupils and a substantial boarding population. The Head is Mark Waldron. The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association.
The school's distinctive co-curricular strength is sailing — the Solent waterfront location and the proximity to the Cowes Week regatta (the world's premier annual sailing regatta) supports a strong sailing programme. The school operates a substantial bursary programme intended to provide educational access for Isle of Wight families regardless of family means.
