About RGS Guildford
The Royal Grammar School Guildford (RGS) traces its foundation to 1509, when Robert Beckingham, a wealthy London grocer with Guildford connections, bequeathed funds for the founding of a free school. Henry VIII's reign saw the school formally chartered, and Edward VI confirmed the royal foundation in 1552. RGS is one of seven schools in the UK to bear the title "Royal Grammar School" and one of only three in the independent sector. It is boys-only, educates around 974 pupils aged 11-18, and is a member of the HMC. The Headmaster is Jonathan Mark Cox.
The school sits on Guildford High Street and continues to use its Grade I listed Tudor schoolhouse, completed in 1557 — one of the oldest school buildings in England still in regular educational use. The six-house structure (Austen, Beckingham, Hamonde, Nettles, Powell and Valpy) is named after the school's principal founders and benefactors.
RGS Guildford is consistently among the strongest independent boys' day schools in Surrey by A-Level performance and Oxbridge offer rates. The Mathematics programme is particularly strong, with regular UK Mathematical Olympiad qualifiers, and the school's sciences (physics, chemistry, biology) produce regular Physics Olympiad and BMO competitors. Sport is centred on cricket — the school owns its own ground at Bradstone Brook and produces Surrey CCC players regularly — and rowing on the River Wey.
The alumni list is unusually weighted to law and the senior civil service: multiple Inns-of-Court silks and senior judges have come through RGS Guildford. The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the RGS Guildford Foundation and remains one of the academically strongest independent day schools in the South East.
