About Leicester Grammar School
Leicester Grammar School (LGS) is a relatively modern foundation in the long history of English public schools. The original Leicester Grammar School — endowed in 1573 by Queen Elizabeth I — operated as a direct grant grammar until its closure in 1976 under the Labour government's reorganisation of state education in the city. A group of Leicester parents and educators refounded the school as a wholly independent fee-charging school in 1981, taking the historic name. LGS now operates on a 35-acre rural campus at Great Glen, just south of Leicester. It is co-educational and educates around 1,282 pupils aged 10-18. The Headmaster is Magnus Anderson; the Chief Executive of the Leicester Grammar School Trust is Stephen Jeffries.
LGS is a member of the HMC and consistently places in the top tier of East Midlands independent schools by A-Level performance and Oxbridge offer numbers. The school's four-house structure — Masters, Dukes, Judges and Vice-Chancellors — references the foundation history of the original Leicester Grammar and its connections to the City of Leicester legal and academic communities.
The campus combines purpose-built academic buildings with extensive sporting facilities including playing fields for rugby, cricket, hockey and athletics, an indoor swimming pool, sports hall and indoor cricket centre. The school operates a substantial CCF and outdoor education programme, and offers full A-Level (no IB) provision in the sixth form. LGS operates a bursary programme intended to maintain the original Leicester Grammar's educational-access tradition for East Midlands families.
