About Guildford High School
Guildford High School (GHS) was founded in 1888 by the Church Schools Company — the Victorian Anglican charity that also founded Surbiton High School and the other Church Schools Company foundations — and operates today within the modern United Learning trust (formerly the United Church Schools Trust). The school is girls-only, ages 4-18, with around 1,021 pupils across the Junior School and Senior School on its central Guildford campus. The Head is Karen Laurie. The school is a member of the GSA.
Guildford High operates immediately adjacent to the Royal Grammar School Guildford (the boys' Tudor-era foundation also profiled in this directory), and the two schools have historically shared concerts, plays and sixth-form opportunities. GHS's A-Level performance places it consistently among the strongest Surrey independent girls' schools by Oxbridge offer numbers, with sciences and modern languages particularly strong. The school's central-Guildford location, near the railway station and the Surrey University campus, makes it accessible across the Home Counties commuter belt.
The school operates a substantial bursary programme via the United Learning trust, intended to maintain the Church Schools Company's 1888 commitment to providing girls' education to the daughters of Surrey families regardless of family means.
