About Framlingham College
Framlingham College was founded in 1864 as the Albert Memorial College — a national memorial to Prince Albert, the Prince Consort, who had died in 1861. The school sits today on a 70-acre rural campus at Framlingham, Suffolk, with views of the medieval Framlingham Castle (the twelfth-century fortress of the Earls of Suffolk). Framlingham became co-educational in 1976 and today educates around 557 pupils with a substantial boarding population. The Head is Louise North. The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association.
The school's most internationally famous alumnus is Ed Sheeran CBE — the singer-songwriter whose albums + (2011), × (2014), ÷ (2017), = (2021) and - (2023) made him one of the best-selling musicians of the twenty-first century, with global album sales exceeding 200 million and over 100 billion Spotify streams. Sheeran's hits include "Thinking Out Loud", "Shape of You", "Perfect" and "Galway Girl". Sheeran attended Framlingham College in the early 2000s; the town of Framlingham appears in his 2017 song "Castle on the Hill", which directly references his hometown. The school operates a substantial bursary programme.
