Emanuel School

Emanuel School was founded in 1594 by Anne Sackville, Lady Dacre, and Queen Elizabeth I as the "Emanuel Hospital," a charitable foundation providing accommodation for poor pensioners and education for twenty orphaned children. The Hospital and School were located originally near Westminster but moved to Battersea, on the south bank of the Thames, in 1883. The school today is co-educational, ages 10-18, with around 1,081 pupils on a 12-acre site close to Clapham Junction railway station — one of the busiest interchanges in the United Kingdom. The Headmaster is Ravi Kothakota; the Chair of Governors is Markus Jaigirder.

Emanuel is a member of the HMC and operates an eight-house structure with strong British naval and military themes: Howe, Clyde, Marlborough, Lyons, Nelson, Drake, Rodney and Wellington. The school's term fee of £7,687 places it in the middle of London independent school pricing, with substantial bursary support via the Emanuel Foundation. A-Level performance has consistently placed Emanuel in the upper quintile of London co-educational independent schools by Oxbridge offer numbers.

The school's identity is shaped by its joint royal-and-noble foundation: Queen Elizabeth I's involvement in 1594 places it among a small group of English schools (alongside Westminster, Christ's Hospital and the original Bridewell) that were founded by direct royal charter rather than by a private benefactor or a livery company. The Anne Sackville endowment continues to fund the school's substantial bursary programme. The riverside Battersea campus, with the Thames immediately to the north, supports the school's strong rowing programme (Emanuel rowers regularly compete at Henley Royal Regatta and the National Schools' Regatta), and the proximity to Clapham Junction makes Emanuel an unusually accessible school for commuter families across south-west London and the southern Home Counties.
