About Bromley High School GDST
Bromley High School was founded in 1883 as a school of the Girls' Public Day School Trust (now the GDST), as part of the Victorian movement to provide academically rigorous day-school education for girls. The school operates today on a 30-acre campus in central Bromley, south-east London — historically the county town of Kent — and educates around 917 pupils ages 4-18. The Headmistress is Angela Drew. The school is a member of the GSA and the GDST and is inspected by the ISI.
The school's two-site campus accommodates an integrated Junior School (ages 4-11) and Senior School (ages 11-18). A-Level results place Bromley High consistently in the top quintile of London/South-East girls' independent schools by Oxbridge offer numbers, with a particularly strong sciences and medical-schools pipeline. The 30-acre campus is unusually generous for a south London school and provides extensive sports facilities for hockey, netball, tennis and athletics.
The school is governed by the Girls' Day School Trust — the Victorian charitable federation founded in 1872 to provide affordable academic education for girls at a time when this was almost completely unavailable. The GDST charitable foundation funds substantial bursary programmes at all 25 GDST schools, intended to maintain the founding Victorian principle of educational access for academically able girls regardless of family means.
The school's most distinguished modern alumna is the BBC News investigative journalist Sue Lloyd-Roberts CBE, whose undercover reporting from inside Burma, Tibet, North Korea, Iran and Syria across three decades produced some of the most courageous human-rights journalism on British television. Lloyd-Roberts died in 2015 of leukaemia and was awarded a posthumous CBE for her services to journalism.
