About Beis Rochel d'Satmar Girls' School
Beis Rochel d'Satmar Girls' School is one of the largest Orthodox Jewish girls' schools in the United Kingdom, founded in 1972 by the Satmar Hasidic community of Stamford Hill in North London. The school is affiliated with the worldwide Satmar Hasidic movement — one of the largest Hasidic dynasties, founded in 1905 by Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum in Szatmárnémeti, Hungary (now Satu Mare, Romania), and re-established after the Holocaust by survivors in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. The Stamford Hill community is one of the principal European Satmar centres.
The school educates around 1,326 girls ages 3-18 — making it one of the very largest UK girls' schools by total roll. The school operates a Yiddish-medium curriculum with the statutory English-language secular subjects (mathematics, English, the sciences) taught as required by Ofsted, alongside the substantial Hebrew religious curriculum of limudei kodesh (Torah, Talmud, Mussar and Hasidic religious philosophy). The principal community oversight is provided by Rabbi Pinchas Posen and the Satmar rabbinic leadership of Stamford Hill.
The school is inspected by Ofsted as an independent faith school. The school serves the closed religious community of Stamford Hill Satmar Hasidim, and graduates progress predominantly to community-based Hasidic seminaries, marriage and family within the Satmar community. The school is not a mainstream-secular UK independent school and operates within a distinct religious framework — the schools system aims to produce graduates fully literate in both the secular and Hasidic religious traditions while preserving the Yiddish-language and Hasidic religious life of the Satmar community.
