About Barnard Castle School

Barnard Castle School — universally known as "Barney" — was founded in 1883 in the County Durham market town of Barnard Castle. The school became co-educational in 1992 and today educates around 659 pupils with a substantial boarding population. The Headmaster is Tony Jackson. The school is a member of the HMC and the Boarding Schools Association. The school's most internationally recognisable contemporary alumnus is Dominic Cummings — the former Senior Adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson (2019-20), the architect of the Vote Leave campaign that won the 2016 EU referendum, and the dominant political strategist of the early Conservative governments of 2019-22. Cummings's controversial April 2020 drive from London to Barnard Castle during the COVID-19 lockdown — during which he was famously photographed at the town — produced one of the great political crises of the Johnson government. The school operates a substantial bursary programme.
